Too Much and Too Little

I am studying epidemilogical methods. I used this book one year ago for an introductory course. I did not enjoy the book, and my group (8) wanted their money back. I stopped reading the assignments out of the book half way through the course. The alternative readings were longer, had more depth, and were more fun.
This book is a worldwind tour of health research methods. That's the problem. They try to cram it all in, in one book. The writting is therefore quick and dry : p
I want to say something nice: You could use this book as a mini-mini-mini encyclopedia. If you were reading an article and found a study design that you are not familiar with, you could consult this book for the 30 second overview of a method : )
If a professor ever asks you to buy this book, remember: you will likely never use this book again after your course. Borrow or buy a second hand copy. Even better, go to the library and read it there. Or how about skipping these readings alltogether? ; )

Andrew Churches is a teacher and ICT enthusiast. He teaches at Kristin School on Auckland's North Shore, a school with a mobile computing program that sees students with personal mobile devices and laptops. He is an edublogger, wiki author, and innovator. In 2008, Andrew's wiki, Educational Origami, was nominated for the Edublogs Best Wiki awards. He contributes to a number of web sites and blogs including Techlearning, Spectrum Education magazine, and the Committed Sardine Blog. This Book is a MUST for Educators!!

In their book, The Digital Diet- Today's Digital Tools in Small Bytes, authors Churches, Crockett, and Jukes have empowered everyone from the most naïve of digital immigrants (like myself) to veteran "techies" (like most of my student teachers) for effectively using technology to foster productive learning in the classroom. In pragmatic, down-to-earth, 1-2-3 directions they have garnered the essence of major technological tools and presented them to learners (students and teachers) in an efficient, graduated way. They offer the latest strategies to help engage students in their own learning through various tools readily available and easily accessible on the internet.
The book's blueprint is excellent - provide the essential vocabulary, explain through both graphics and words in a common sense manner, deliver a well-thought-out rubric aligned with Bloom's Taxonomy, and provide resources for further study. Each chapter ends with follow-up questions, which can be used for individual reflection or group discussion.
Their guiding principles for what it means to be a responsible, ethical digital user should be required knowledge for every member of the internet society! This book is deceptively simple in its design and monumental in its impact. I've spend the entire week-end following up on their suggestions and can honestly say, "I'm hooked!!"
As someone who works with teachers and administrators on a daily basis, I can wholeheartedly assure both novice and veteran educators that this book is worth your time and money. It simplifies the mysteries of teaching to the digital learner and challenges us to view students as partners in their own learning! It is empowering, informative, and most of all -- useful!

About the Author
Karen began her involvement with emotional intelligence when she founded the Nueva School (Hillsborough, California). She saw that the central foundation of a school should be not simply giving students knowledge, but giving them the opportunity to develop wisdom. Karen created the nation's first emotional intelligence curriculum, Self Science, a program she facilitated for nearly 3 decades. She was honored as Educator of the Year by the California Association of the Gifted. She has served on a broad range of trustee and advisory boards for social, emotional & mental health. Karen earned her MA at the University of Massachusetts.

Clear guidelines for a stronger community

As a former student at Nueva, a school that included Self Science in their curriculum, I was constantly amazed while reading this book by its accuracy and specificity. The book clearly, with many examples and guidelines, lays out a year-long (or two-year) curriculum that allows students to learn about and make connections with others as well as themselves. Self Science is one of the most valuable classes I've ever taken.

Entertaining, clever, and innovative. A fun and useful, quick read.

An entertaining and most useful read. Most of Masters' tips are truly clever and ingenious, and in my opinion are definitely worth considering. While some of his suggestions may have a comical, almost fantastical flavour (such as his 'old jacket trick'), they never the less seem to be all grounded in good judgement.
Contrary to some of the 'tamer' travel hack books available, Masters does not seem afraid to suggest (in circumstances he deems necessary) even the most audacious (and innovative, not to mention potentially risky, even) traveling hacks. In my opinion these tips are definitely worth their nominal price: for the traveler on a budget they'll surely be of use, and for the dreamer on his couch, they'll certainly entertain.

Why I Wrote This Book

I'm Lauren Sompayrac, author of this "talking virus" book. During the decade between the first and second editions, the amount of information on viruses exploded, and textbooks have swelled to more than 1000 pages. To counter this information overload, my goal in writing the second edition of How Pathogenic Viruses Think was to present virology stripped to its essence, without all the jargon and detail which can obscure the important virological principles. I was about half way through this project when, early one morning, I woke up and realized that, although what I was writing was good science, it was really boring!

At that moment, I remembered a figure from the first edition - a figure which showed a virus, reclining on a psychiatrist's couch, being "interviewed" by someone who looks like Sigmund Freud. I thought, "Why not let the viruses tell their own stories? That might really be fun!" So I got out of bed and began to write the dialogue that appears in this second edition. What I realized was that this "device" helps me emphasize WHY viruses do what they do - because the interviewer can prod the viruses to reveal their secrets. And when one understands the "why," the "what" becomes much more interesting - and easier to remember.

Each virus I interview has a different personality. Some are rather cheeky, and others quite gentlemanly. One is very young (HIV-1), and another (HTLV-I) is so old that he is crotchety and hard of hearing. All have interesting stories to tell, and most contend that the diseases they cause are really not their fault! I had a blast writing this book, and I hope you will enjoy it too. Although viral pathogenicity is serious business, there is no reason it should be boring.

Wonderful (not text) Book!

This book is the textbook for my Virology class and it makes the class much more understandable. It is so clear and concise that even students in high school AP biology could read and grasp most of this book.
