This is an amazing book. I don't know where to begin

This is an amazing book. I don't know where to begin. I'll start with the writing quality. A Flame Put Out is a beautifully written story. The characterization brilliant. The plot fresh and full of unexpected twists. I mean***no spoilerS sorry*** the end I didn't see it coming and I've been on hooks for the final book since I read the second in the series a year ago. ERIN, hurry up and release the darn thing. What makes this truly a quality read is while the heroine is easy to like and have sympathy for, I mean she's a woman trapped in her era and persevering, but the Hero isn't exactly the kind of Viking you'd sympathize with. Why, because Erin wrote him true to history. And yet I do hope and care for him, and like the character without having to like the behavior of the man. And that is a brilliant accomplishment by a writer. Few writers can do that and Erin does it amazingly. I can't finish this review without remarking on the high standard of historical research and fact in this book. Simply put: A Flame Put Out is a read, a reread, of exception quality. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT.

Great addition to the series.

Alrik and Selia, together again? When the story begins with Selia telling Alrik that she loves him, I wasn't sure if this was going to be a true romance or if things would go terribly wrong. Alrik is not a typical hero. He is flawed, and in this part of the series, those flaws became so dark, that it was impossible for me to have any thread of sympathy or empathy for him. Selia also grows into a nurturing mother, who matures quickly when danger approaches her new family. The growth of the characters was top notch.

Enough about the plot, which has been well described by other reviewers. Let me just say that I thought the writing was smooth, uncluttered, and full of wonderful details that lifted the historical tale brilliantly.

I applaud the author's gift for storytelling, and her eloquent writing style, which was captivating throughout.

What Happens When Love Isn't Enough?

I received this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
The story is a continuation from “Odin’s Shadow” and starts with Selia’s return to her husband Alrik. She tells him that she will stay with him and that she loves him. Alrik is grateful that she has returned since he is lost without her. Selia must now deal with the consequences of staying with Alrik and must make many difficult decisions to ensure her safety and the safety of her unborn child. The birth of Muirin’s child, a slave girl whose child belongs either to Alrik or to his brother Ulfrik, changes Selia’s world forever. She must convince Alrik to claim the child so that he will become Hersir and lead the Vikings one day. If he doesn’t claim the child, Selia’s child will one day have to lead raids against his own Irish descendants. The thought breaks Selia’s heart so she must work fast to save her child from a cruel fate. What Selia doesn’t know is that this simple choice will bring much pain and sorrow to her and her family. One choice can change the entire course of history, for the worse.
The entire time I read this book, I couldn’t wait to read the next page. Not only are the details crisp and beautiful, but Mrs. Riley creates tension during each key moment so that you can’t put the book down until you know what happens. This time around, Selia has grown up and is no longer a love sick puppy who forgives Alrik for all of his horrible deeds. She is forced to finally see Alrik for the monster that he is when he threatens the children. A person can accept many levels of abuse when they are the one being abused, but things change when a child becomes involved. Though Selia is taking a huge risk in protecting her children, I was glad to see that she was able to make the difficult decision of putting her children first.
I found it interesting that the relationship between Selia and her wicked step-daugther, Ingrid, finally changed. I always thought that they would end up killing each other. Now they are forced to work together against a common enemy. I was touched by a moment when Ingrid actually sympathized with Selia, though Selia decided that she didn’t want Ingrid’s pity.
Mrs. Riley has taken the idea of loving a cruel man and explored all the levels of abuse that a person must go through before finally realizing that the love they once had is not enough to excuse their horrible behavior. It’s a tale that many are familiar with, but one that not everyone can walk away from. She has taken a small naive girl and turned her into a strong woman able to protect her child, while sacrificing her needs for theirs. I love this series and am hopeful for a good outcome in “Oath Breaker.” I gave “A Flame Put Out” 5 stars.

About the Author
Hans Augusto Rey was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1898. As a child, he spent much of his free time in that city's famous Hagenbeck Zoo drawing animals. After serving in the army during World War I, he studied philology and natural science at the University of Hamburg. He then married Margret Rey and they moved to Montmartre for four years. The manuscript for the first Curious George books was one of the few items the Reys carried with them on their bicycles when they escaped from Paris in 1940. Eventually, they made their way to the United States, and Curious George was published in 1941. Curious George has been published in many languages, including French, German, Japanese, Afrikaans, and Norwegian. Additional Curious George books followed, as well as such other favorites as CECILY G. AND THE NINE MONKEYS and FIND THE CONSTELLATIONS.

"What those guys said"

The reviews on this book are remarkably accurate. This is not a childrens' book. Even though decades have passed since it was first published, no other text has been able to bump it off a 'best in class' position. If you want to look to the sky for familiar shapes, this is the book for you.

There are a couple of fundamental ways to study the heavens. A 'modern' approach might be to put your head down, click in a few celestial coordiantes, and wait for the telescope to find a target for you. However a more interesing approach would be to find shape in the sky and locate targets manually. To do that you need to recognize those old landmarks in the sky, the constellations.

The big problem in identifying constellations is to find shape from seemingly random dots. Ray creatively used the same stars, but made 'new' stick diagrams that actually look like what they are supposed to represent. This makes a constellation much easier to visualize, remember, and recognize later. Other texts that attempt this effort fall short because they don't emphasize visual recognition clues.

A major fault of modern texts is the inclusion of unnecessary detail. Ray puts in a few choice details that help the memory and add interesting character to the figures in the sky. But by excluding minutia he draws the reader back to the goal at hand. Ultimately you need to memorize a blueprint of the sky, and this workbook will be your best friend to help reach that goal. Bravo.

A Guide to the Stars Simple Enough for Curious George but Sophisticated Enough for You!

The best introductory guide to the stars and constellations, bar none! It has numerous features which makes learning the constellations much easier and more fun. Here are a few examples:

(1) H.A. Rey has done a great service by redrawing the constellations (using the same stars) so that they *actually* look like the figure they represent. This is in contrast to so many other constellation drawings (by others) that bear no resemblance at all to the figure they supposedly represent. They come in two varieties: either they are lifelike representations with no correlation at all between the figure and the individual stars or they are stick figures that look more like abstract art!

(2) Rather than deluging you with lots of irrelevant facts, H.A. Rey has chosen some very pertinent, interesting facts and anecdotes to share about the stars and the constellations. These are the kind of facts that are fun to share with others when you introduce them to the constellations!

(3) H.A. Rey has very wisely left the more detailed and technical explanations for discussion later in the book. He starts off by telling you just the basics that you need to start stargazing right away!

(4) On the Calendar Chart pages you will see two star charts on facing pages. On the left you'll see just the stars and on the right you'll see the stars with the connecting lines to show the constellations. Going back and forth between the pages is a great way to start to memorize the celestial patterns so that when you get outside it will be easier to pick them out!

The Ultimate Guide to the Constellations

If you've ever wanted to REALLY learn the constellations, this is the best book ever written to do just that. Rey's style of depicting the characters up in the night sky as stick figures makes them very easy to find, learn, and remember for both children and adults. Rey uses the English translation of the constellation names, making them even more user-friendly (though he also gives their classical names, as well).

Other methods use only the brightest stars contained within the constellation and draw lines between them to form odd-shaped geometric figures which don't really have anything to do with their namesake. For example: Hercules, using the Rey method, looks like a stick-figure man running and brandishing a club. The geometric style shows a box with lines radiating out, away from it, sort of like a childish pinwheel. Believe it or not, there are some people who are actually devoted to this non-sensical method of showing constellations(!) and hate the Rey system because it's not the way *they* learned them.

Rey's book also contains a wealth of other, more technical, information about our solar system, how the Earth's sky has its own mapping grid (similar to the Earth's lines of latitude and longitude), and there are even easy-to-use tables for finding the visible planets (Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn) at any time of the year for the next ten years.

As a child, I tried to learn the constellations from books and charts that used the geometric style, and after a few tries, gave up. The names meant nothing to me, and the shapes were dull and made no sense. Then I got hold of "The Stars: A New Way To See Them," by H.A. Rey, and within 6 months I found and memorized more than half of the constellations visible from light-polluted San Jose.

Detractors say learning Rey's constellations will make learning the "standard" or "conventional" (i.e. "dull" or "nonsensical") constellations more difficult. Pure poppycock. I have had zero problem with this, and can use both methods as easily as you might interpret a stop sign using the word "stop," or one using the international "no" symbol over an upraised palm. There's a huge advantage to learning Rey's method, in that you can use it to get people interested in astronomy much more easily!

I'm into amateur astronomy, now, heavily involved with volunteer work at the local observatory. It's the highlight of my night to be able to hear children say, "I can see it! I can see it!" when I point out a constellation to them, and show it to them in Rey's book. Who knows? Maybe I've started something for those kids...

Grade 6 Up?To most modern kids, classics may be great, worthy, even exciting stories, but they were written in and for their own times and the context can sometimes be obscure. Using the visually irresistible printing techniques popularized by the "Eyewitness" series, these two books, when prominently displayed, will probably attract more impulse readers than some of the dustier editions. But do they accomplish their stated aim? Direct textual illustration is plentiful, lively, and useful. The reproductions of prints, photographs, and maps that pepper each page and are intended to enhance readers' grasp of the times, however, are a mixed success. There is a sameness to them and an arbitrary feel to their use. Pirate buffs will find Treasure Island's variety of ship drawings, details of sailing minutiae, and photographs of pieces of eight or guns and swords quite satisfying. Verne's work is less enhanced by its graphics. This episodic travelogue would be best served by lots of clear maps with the route well marked. But the few maps shown are so small that the legends are unreadable and country and city names are blurred. The explanatory captions (credited to Jean-Pierre Verdet only on the copyright page) accompanying the latter are largely superfluous, although they do add random snippets of historical background to the journey. It's the views of old ships and trains, of costumed natives, and distant ports of call--from Port Said to San Francisco--that evoke the tale's panorama of the exotic, just as the many lurid Verne trading cards and other spinoffs capture the plot's melodramatic highlights. steam powered excellence

I can't believe that a 130+ year old book translated to English was good enough to keep me up half the night but this brilliant old gem did. The story features the height of late 1800 steam technology and a couple of heros who want to circumnavigate the earth in 80 days to win a bet. The characters are surprisingly likable and the action is just GREAT. Put this at the top of the queue for great free reads and you will get a wonderful easy read and a brilliant view of the world.

Very Good Even If No Balloon Rides

The story is about an eccentric Englishman named Phileas Fogg who makes a twenty thousand pound bet with five of his rich country club friends to travel around the world in eighty days with his trusty servant Passepartout a Frenchman. Along the way they have to overcome many obstacles. Fogg spends most of his fortune overcoming these obstacles and if they don't win the bet he will be ruined. There are some things however that even money can't overcome and several times Fogg is faced with a moral decision that if he pursues the right thing to do will significantly set him back on time.
Their travels take them through England, Paris, the Suez Canal, Egypt, India, Hong Kong, Japan, America, and Ireland. In India they rescue a princess who stays on with them throughout the rest of their journey and a love interest grows between her and Fogg. There is also another subplot involving a bank robbery in England where 55 thousand pounds have been stolen, and Fogg is considered to be the main suspect. A detective Fix is assigned to follow Fogg and to arrest him once he sets foot on English territory.
This book seems to be split into two parts. During the first part of the book when things are going smoothly the servant Passepartout seems to be the main character. At each port Fogg stays in his cabin and just focuses on the next leg of the trip while Passepartout ventures out and gives you a description of the land. It would seem a shame to travel all around the world and not pause to take in any of the sights as Fogg does. I found most of these early chapters pretty mundane and uneventful.
The subplot with Fix at times becomes annoying, and it isn't until they are all working towards the same goal, that this line of the story improves. I also found the exchange rate between dollars and pounds confusing at times. The pound must have been about four or five times greater than the dollar at the time this story was written. Fogg leaves England with around twenty thousand pounds and spends it seems over a hundred thousand dollars on the trip.
Later on as the story progresses and things start to go wrong the focus changes over to Fogg. Passepartout still does some heroic things, but Fogg takes charge and shows some redeeming qualities. The pace of the story quickens and becomes more enjoyable with a few skirmishes taking place in India and America. Fogg seems a different person upon returning to England, and his life is changed forever.
My wife has a framed poster that hangs on one of our walls with a collage of all of the movies that have won the best picture of the year award. "Around The World In Eighty Days" won the award in 1956, and the picture is represented in the collage with the main character Phileas Fogg and his trusty servant Passepartout taking a balloon flight. Based on this picture for years I always assumed the book was about a trip in a balloon around the world. I was surprised then to find out once I finally got a chance to read the actual book that they travel by boat, train, car, sled, and even elephant, but that they never travel by balloon. It turns out that the most memorable scene from the movie was made up by the director and added on to the story. The director seemed to have come to same conclusion that I did, that the written story itself was very good, but I was expecting something a little more.
The book was written in 1873. Jules Verne the author is a Frenchman. In this day and age it was pleasing to see both England and America looked upon in such a favorable light. Englishmen were portrayed as noble and Americans were portrayed as wild and adventurous.

I think this book is a superior book because it is full of action. This book is about a man named Mr. Phileas Fogg, and his faithful servant, Passepartout, that wager a bet that They can travel the whole world in eighty days stopping at Suez via Mont Cenis and Brindisi, then to Bombay, then Calcutta, Hong Kong, Japan (Yokohama), San Francisco, New York, back to London, all within eighty days, and by steamboats, and trains. However, a nosy detective, Detective Fix, tracks them down, and tries to arrest Mr. Fogg because he believes that Fogg stole fifty-five thousand pounds. As one may guess, this greatly detains Mr. Fogg, and it seems like he may not make the trip around the world after all. However, the Fix never seems to catch up with Fogg, and Fogg triumphs over most of the obstacles that come his way, like missing boats, missing trains, missing people, and Fogg even meets and rescues a beautiful Indian Princess called Aouda. However, Fix finally catches up to the detective, and everything seems lost for Fogg until Fix discovers that Fogg was not the robber, and Fogg is released. Even so, Fogg is one day late, and in doing so, misses the train that would have taken him to London precisely to win the bet. He ordered a special train, but even in doing so, still misses the bet...or so he thinks. The ending of the book is a very unexpected one. Read this book and find out!

David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D. is Director of the Institute for Advanced Spiritual Research. He is a widely known authority within the fields of consciousness research and spirituality. Hawkins books are there for you when you are ready

Otherwise they will make no sense, or else be grossly misinterpreted. He himself states time and time again that nothing at one level of consciousness is true at another. How can one even *attempt* to explain the unexplainable and succeed on any level unless the consciouness that is reading is quite fertile and ready? The Truth that Hawkins teaches is so incredibly radical and direct that the 'person' submits and the ego dissolves, or else that person goes into paradigm shock and denies it, or just dismisses it as strange dogmatic baloney.
I truly believe that books on this level of Power find the right people through synchronicity when they are ready to receive it. If you are not at the stage of spiritual evolution to surrender *all*, and I mean *all* beliefs and positionalities than Hawkins works are likely to anger and confuse you. This is obviously evidenced by certain reviews of his works.
He himself warns of this in his prefaces, that his works are only meant for the extremely dedicated spirtual seeker willing to surrender all thoughts, desires, and positionalities to God.

I am not a brilliant book reviewer...

I am an atheist objectivist who picked up this book at random in the psychology section of the library when the book I wanted was out. I took it home without even cracking the cover, because the minimalist title intrigued me. I quickly devoured the book like it was a morsel of food to a starving person, despite 'God' being sprinkled through it like salt. Here is how I was affected even before the completion of my first pass:

1) I began letting go of 'mind' and felt lighter as I navigated my complex work environment.

2) I became simply 'the body' and experienced the sensation of walking on air. My entire countenence changed for the positive and I began 'floating' with calm success through otherwise tedious and stressful situations.

3) I began to approach and treat my pets and all human acquaintences as though they were my 'self'. Now, when seek and find 'self' in other's eyes, the feeling between us changes to a calm unity (love). All tension vanishes.

4) It became clear to me that some strange 'enlightening' experiences, such as the day I spontaneously and without warning 'lost God' (abandoned the strict organized religion I grew up in), were not due to the rationality of my mind, but were simply an acknowledgement of truth.

5) I realized that a set of 'rules to live by' I wrote and embraced when I was 22 (and subsequently dismissed as unsophisticated and naive in later years) was actually an awakening to truth.

It may not be possible to fully realize the potential awakenings of this book in the space of a mortal life. I find myself in a 'spiral' reading pattern, reading from beginning to end repeatedly, picking up momentum and comprehension with each revolution. I may never finish.

Stunning clarity

In some broad, general sense, this book should be considered philosophy or theology. It gives what can reasonably be considered a comprehensive discussion of human consciousness, from the most rudimentary human awareness to the status of great enlightened masters. While it does stand alone as a complete work, it is the third of Dr. Hawkin's trilogy on consciousness, the first volume being Power vs. Force and the second being Eye of the I. It is useful to read the books in order, but it is useful to read this book, either in order or out of order.
As a mathematician, I really do enjoy reading good math texts. They teach me something, and I can go away from a session (perhaps an arduous session) with the ability to work new problems. That is delightful, a real joy. Very frequently, I have wished for an "engineering theology" text. By that I mean that I would like to study---perhaps hard---and walk away with the ability to improve my life in some way. Many of the great mystic writers are very impenetrable for me. They wax poetic, and I have no way to apply their great ideas to my own situation. Like Faust, I can say, "There stand I now, poor stupid me, and I'm just as smart as I used to be." That is very frustrating. Perhaps the most accessible of the mystic teachers is St. John of the Cross. After many years of study, even his simple lessons still elude me. I have not yet "caught the wave."
Dr. Hawkins explains the entire spectrum of consciousness, right up to enlightenment itself, in a way that is entirely understandable for many people, and certainly for anyone who wants to study hard. His approach is hardly a workbook, but it does contain enormous numbers of very practical ideas to help any person to improve. That may not be every person's goal, but it is my goal. If I didn't want to do better, I would not bother reading a book. I'd go hit tennis balls or something else. This book seems more than just sophisticated. It seems exceedingly sophisticated, and at a high level indeed. I cannot say that I have encountered a higher level (that I could recognize). Yet it is understandable and even offers very significant tests most people could do in order to verify its validity. For me, at least, it is a great lesson indeed, and I am reading it over and over again.
