This is a copy my husband requested to give to other people, so that should tell you it is an excellent book. While I didn't agree with everything Fox said, he is a straight shooter and doesn't beat around the bush about Christianity. We also got copies for each of our kids.

Robert E. Lee after the war

Instead of yet another book about Lee full of military analysis and war, here we have a book about what he did with the rest of his life. The book begins with the surrender at Appomattox and ends with his death. I'm not even sure why I started reading this. I didn't need to read yet another book about Lee, but I'm glad I did. This one was a good read, and showed that Lee thought way beyond war, and was instrumental in helping Southerners mend fences with the North after the war. Even though I've read several other books about Lee and his various family members, I still learned a lot from this book. Highly recommended.

Great writer, great historian and great biographer!

Flood has produced a masterpiece that reveals the personality and character of Lee more than any book I've read. Lee's tremendous contribution to society after the war is presented in such an enjoyable, readable manner that each revelation unlocked about the inner man becomes a delight to the reader. I read this book in two sittings because I was so entranced by it. The author does not write from a hero-worship perspective but rather allows the facts and anecdotes of Lee's family life speak for themselves. It is for the reader to conclude that Lee had one of the most fully integrated characters a man can possess--honor, self-discipline, love of his Creator, humility, regard for all people, and an innate sense of fairness and reason. Lee lived only five years after the war but these years were spent performing maximum service to the South and to the US at large. It's a shame that so many books about Lee focus mainly on battle strategies and have the agenda of supporting the lost cause or revisionist view of why the South lost. If you are interested only in battle statistics and strategies, this book may not excite you, but if you want to really know the man himself, don't miss this treasure of a book.

Good and convenient daily devotional

Thirty-one good devotionals that each focuses on a different one of God's promises to us. These are just the right length for me. Each morning I spend about 5-10 minutes to read, study and meditate on that day's devotion. The topic for that morning becomes my theme for the day. For example today being the 5th the topic/theme is to be grateful to God for all of his blessings. So today whenever I had a free moment I did just that.
I plan for this to be my morning devotional for the next 12-15 months. Each month with each re-reading and meditation I will go further and deeper with the daily themes than I did the month before.
I am also keeping a notebook in which I will write my thoughts and insights. I have a section at the end where I am recording every time I see God's hand at work in my life. In just five days I have nine entries.
If you are looking for a daily devotional that is upbeat, inspiring and designed for someone with a busy life then this may be what you are looking for.

Game Changer!

Often times we forget the things that are promised to us and how our words can create or repel our future. This is an absolutely priceless alternative for the mostly negative news, first thing in the morning diet. This is also great for playing in the background, as your kids are getting ready for school. If you don't think what you hear in the morning gets recycled all day, listen to a song first thing when you awake and you will get my point. You will sing it all day.

This is a uber-fantastic piece of work. I could not be more pleased. Bravo!

Engineering Intersects Design

As an engineer in other media (software) who enjoys civil engineering and architecture done well, this book entertained and inspired me as few others in the last five years. Peter Rice appears to enjoy a risk, a change, a challenge. He listens to the materials to find solutions to problems, creating the practical engineering resolution to an abstract design. The newest tools, materials, techniques, talents are marshalled into the cause. But so is a spark of inspiration, an angle of attack.
The interaction of these words - risk, change, challenge, materials, engineering, design, problems, solutions - is described in a mostly auto-biographical tale. Each chapter centers on a project or two in which Rice was involved. Particularly fun was how working with the different people and cultures sometimes added to the challenge, and the result.
There is little doubt in my mind that any creative, design-centered profession can draw inspiration from this book.

Humane and inventive...

The austerity of the title and prose only bolster Rice's deserved recognition as a genius of our time. Rice looks back on his past projects and recounts them with a very unique combination of sensitivity and logic. A degree of sadness overcomes you when reading his remarkably sincere narrations, knowing that he wrote this in the final throes of his life.

If you have the funds to actually purchase this book, you won't regret it.

A hard to reach star, but one of the brightest.

Peter Rice was a genius behind modern landmarks like the Sydney Opera, the Centre Pompidou, and Lloyd's Bank in London. This british structural engineer gave our world a mighty heave to the future. He humbly sings throughout this book to his love of his work, to the greatness of human mind, and to the evolution of our understanding of materials and tools.

Great book

This book shows the way a vast majority of the people of America think. To long, this majority has been belittled and now Limbaugh has come along and (as he writes) validates what these people think on a wide array of subjects. That is the overriding reason for the success of this book. He has done his homework and it shows in these pages. The politcal left in this country, content to make childish insults, ignore this book at their own peril for this book will be noted as a milestone in Conservative literature.

Not a Limbaugh Fan, but Enjoyed the Book Nonetheless

I'm not a Republican. I'm not a Democrat. I'm just a regular guy interested in knowing why so many people like Rush. After reading this book, I think I found out.
I never liked Rush's radio program too much, finding it to be elementary and simplistic (his TV program was even more so), and found his "Democrats are bad, but Republicans are good" talk to be even more childlike. After reading his book, however, I came to realize (to Rush's credit) that perhaps this seeming simplemindedness was due less to Rush's lack of intellectual profundity and more to trying to secure good ratings in a the constricting medium of radio.
The print medium suits Rush much better, which is saying a lot given his immense radio popularily. I was impressed by Rush's facile writing style and pleased by the fact that Rush provided empirical support for many of his pro-conservative arguments (something he rarely, if ever, did on his radio or TV programs). That said, Rush still has a penchant for answering difficult questions in the context of a simple black-or-white framework, and I was especially disappointed with his stance on the environment (basically, we could do whatever we want to the environment because it is strong and will fix itself like it has for billions of years).
Over all, however, I thought it was a decent book, one that presents Rush as a thinking individual and not just another radio personality spewing off-the-cuffers to appease the rating gods. I'd recommend this book to anybody who is not a die-hard conservate (nothing new here for them) who would like some perspective on their own views, or would just like to see where the "other side" is coming from.
Plus, it's entertaining, especially when you don't agree.

Right even when not speaking in Republicanese

Since the 80's Rush Limbaugh has pontificated from his throne at the EIB Institute on the most popular Syndicated Radio Talk show on the planet.

His conservative takes on things are a refreshing antidote to the "Far Left wing" branch of Liberalism & the Democratic Party, and this 1st book is a wonderful introduction to him, his views, and a lot of truth telling you rarely found on the air when the book burst on the scene in 1992.

I once was a Reagan Democrat, then became a Clinton Dem, yet still listened to Rush on the Radio.

I've since voted For Bush twice, and finally have evolved into a Registered Moderate Republican.

I used to joke that Rush made perfect sense when he wasn't speaking Republicanese, but, obviously, that view has changed profoundly over the years.

sized like its predecessor

Imagine Africa, volumes I and II

In, say, 2007, a group of artists, authors, and intellectuals gathered at the Goree Institute in Dakar, Senegal, to discuss and reflect. They wanted to create a vehicle for a dynamic vision of the African continent. This ongoing discussion (and others) can be viewed at [...]. One of the first manifestations of this spirit was a small book 6” tall and 8” long, a kind of giant postcard. The book was 232 pages and produced by a collective called Pirogue, a creative expression of the Goree Institute. A website was established and a book, introduced by Breyten Breytenbach, was published in 2011, and titled imagine africa; the artwork on the cover features 3 figures in color, 2 upright and the righthand one bent at the waist. The Pirogue Collective no longer has a website and the first publisher no longer exists or has morphed into the Archipelago Press which can be contacted at[...]. imagine africa II, sized like its predecessor, was published in 2014 and introduced by Georges Lory. The artwork on its cover shows 3 panels in color primarily of faces. The books are copyrighted by an organization called “Island Position.”
Each volume contains prose, poetry and artwork. Each work seeks to represent all parts of Africa, and works not originally in English are translated side-by-side with the original. Several of the writers are widely known, and readers seeking a wider breadth should use these volumes to discover writers previously unknown to them. Some pieces are long (20+ pages, some are short). Both books contain treasures. Volume II is a little more cosmopolitan than volume I and has fewer "so this is Africa" essays. Both volumes are extraordinary.

A wide view to African writing

Imagine Africa is an exciting collection of writing---essays, poems, short fiction, collected oral stories---all reflecting the greater African tradition. There are calls to arms, elegies for loss, looks to the future, works of politics and stories of more personal life. Everything is marked by the African continent, even those stories that reflect the diaspora to the countries of the Caribbean.

Most of these authors are new to me and I appreciate the brief biographies provided which often list other titles to pursue. Most of these works were not written in English and full information re the translators is also provided. The material is shown in its original language, then in English. This might be Africaan, French, Arabic, Dutch or a combination. International readers can therefore possibly read in their own language.

I have been attempting to read more African fiction but this book has opened my eyes to a wider world of African writing that I must pursue if I hope to understand that huge area of the world.

Highly recommended as a primer on African writing.

AMAZING! Every MS1 &2 should own!

Being an MS2 trying to effectively study for the boards, you'll find sometimes it takes many books to explain what you are not understanding UNTIL now! I literally only need this book for anatomy,embryology,physiology,pathology and pharmacology (relevant biochem,micro etc are found where needed). The book is written wonderfully, with a conversationalist flow. If you are like me and have trouble just reading lists/bullets of information you HAVE to know, it has been easier to read full chapters of this book compared to all the lists found in First Aid then go quickly review first aid. BUT thank goodness it flows WITH first aid as well. I love the nice side notes which feature key facts or "tie ins"to other chapters or clinical correlations. It help keeps the information feeling less overwhelming while making sure you get the big picture. In fact, there is plenty extra that you can easily annotate into first aid yet not rewrite a book or make you wonder if you are filling first aid with "lower yield facts".As far as organization, I find it much clearer than first aid but it tries to mimic first aid as much as possible.I love how every major pathology has an intro, presentation,diagnosis, treatment and prognosis subheading. I have found myself looking at cases and remembering the presentation or the drug just from reading it displayed that way (vs first aid that separates anatomy,physiology,path and pharm for the same syndrome). It made my qbank review be more efficient. In fact,I really wish I had bought this book earlier and studied it as an adjunct to all my classes (once you get to organ systems)so I would recommend this for first years as well. I think the earlier the better.

AMAZING BOOK

This book is a MUST BUY when studying for my Step 1! I do not think that I would have been able to score a 230+ without this book. It's basically First Aid Step 1 but with paragraphs, more vibrant pictures, and tables. If you are having a hard time with First Aid Step 1 then this is the book for you.

Honestly, I could only go through First Aid Step 1 (2013) if I read it along with watching the Doctors In Training (DIT) videos. This book enabled me to cover the material without the videos.
