About the Author
Steve McCurry (b.1950) launched his career as a photojournalist when, disguised in native garb, he crossed the Pakistan border into Afghanistan thirty years ago. His remarkable coverage won him the Robert Capa Gold Medal, which is awarded to photographers who exhibit exceptional courage and enterprise. Famous also for his work in Southeast Asia, McCurry's photographs are beautiful, uplifting and affecting. McCurry is a regular contributor to many international journals including National Geographic magazine. He is a member of Magnum Photos.

McCurry"s Magnum Opus

I'll try not to repeat what other reviewers have said or what the product is described as by the manufacturer. Regarding the version I received from Amazon: the cover sheath that the book comes in is black unlike the pink one in the photograph. The book is bound in blue silk (like the product photo). The signed print is well placed inside the front cover of the book. The reproduction is superb and the paper is exceptionally thick. The publisher, Phaidon, could have done a better job in packing the product in a larger shipping box, but mine arrived with no real damage to speak of.

It's a marvelous collection of McCurry's career thus far. The prints are so big at times you feel as if you are right behind the camera taking the photo with McCurry. Most photo books don't give you that sensation as the prints are often less than half the size of the ones found here. It's not as big as Helmet Newton's "SUMO" (full size version) or other offerings from Tachen like "GOAT", but in some ways it's better because it's big but not too big. Unlike some other massive photo books, you can sit down in a chair and leaf through it or lay it on a table or even the floor, which ever suits you best.

The fact that only 3300 of these books have been made and that it is signed by McCurry make it an obvious collectors item. It's worth it.

Breathtaking book

To be perfectly honest, I ordered this book as soon as it was announced, then waited months while it was being made. In that time I developed a thought that it requires some serious nerve for any photographer to publish a book titled "the Iconic Photographs" while still alive.

When the book arrived I was somewhat consumed with the idea of how can anyone possible declare his own images to be iconic. Well, I stand corrected, Steve McCurry have delivered a fantastic collection of images, well worthy of the Iconic Photographs label.

The book is filled with images reflecting on images rather than religious obsession with technical data, and I am impressed to see Steve have included images where focus or exposure may not be "technically entirely accurate" however the images, the moment and the composition simply are so strong and magnificent that discussing technical data is meaningless. On a related note, the book show images captured with everything from film to high-end 24+megapix cameras, and a historical progression clearly showing the fingerprints of some of the earlier digital slr cameras, but through this Steve McCurry carries the same tone and look. To me this is a iconic book for the reason that it is about images, magnificent images.

For a moment forget the price of this book, and simply enjoy the sheer magnificence of a huge book of photography. Each page another outstanding moment captured and printed.

I am completely delighted with this book. and yes, Steve you are forgiven for declaring your work iconic. it IS.!

A rich tapestry of McCurry's best photographs

This is a review of the 'Limited Signed Edition' of 'Steve McCurry: The Iconic Photographs'
...and what an iconic collection it is! From the now-legendary 1984 photo of the green-eyed
Afghan girl to lesser-known McCurry photos, this incredible tome encompasses the absolute best
work of the famed National Geographic photographer.
...So why didn't I give the 'Limited Signed Edition' 5 stars? Well, a couple of things- first,
a good number of the photos are spread over two pages, so you end up with a crease right down
the middle of some great pictures-rather the publisher would have confined these photos to one
page, or made them fold-outs(Which would have made the book more costly, I'm sure). Second
(and this might just bother purists,or collectors of signed first editions like myself),Mr.
McCurry hasn't actually signed the book itself-rather, his signature is on an approx. 8x19 1/2
yellow page at the front of the book that also lists the Limited Edition number and information
about the enclosed signed print. I would assume that the photographer signed these 'yellow pages'
at an earier date, then sent them to the publisher for enclosure in the book when it was bound.
(But then I'm not a publisher and not totally sure how these things are done.) This could affect
the future value of the book. That being said,the beautiful,enclosed signed print might just prove to
be valuable in itself...it certainly is from an artistic point of view!
But,hey, don't let my nitpicking stop you...if you're a fan of Steve McCurry's work, you really
should check out this book. Overall, it's pretty amazing, and the photos are beautifully presented
on high-quality paper...ensuring you'll be able to enjoy this wonderful collection for many years
to come.

"There's No Land Like Poland"

When you think about Europe, you have seen or read numerous histories of Britain, France, Russia, Germany, Italy, Spain and even Portugal. There are lots of books that deal with "Eastern Europe" in the modern age, with Ottoman Turkey, the USA, and many other parts of the world, but comprehensive histories of Poland are rare. I realized this when I found the present volume in a Melbourne book store back in 1984. Its 546 pages looked a daunting task, needing a considerable space of time to wade through. That's why I didn't get around to it till now. I had never really absorbed even the basic outline of Polish history. I came to the right place, but because I only bought volume 1 back then, my learning curve came to a screeching halt in 1795.

Starting with an excellent chapter on Polish historiography, Davies proceeds to puncture all the balloons of nationalist, imperialist, and Communist histories. It seems that his book, translated, has been used in the Polish educational system post-1989. That's a signal honor. I can't claim to be expert enough to comment on whether his perspective is worthy or not, but it is thorough and interestingly written. There are vast amounts of place and personal names--rulers, landlords, soldiers, poets, priests--offset by a great series of maps and charts. Nobody but a serious student of Polish history would be able to retain such copious information. Davies lacks pomposity; he's down to earth and somehow you feel you can believe him. A good sense of humor lights up the text with occasional flashes, even if Polish history is anything but humorous most of the time. Anyone who writes, "In the last resort, all our ancestors were alien, mongrel immigrants." gets my vote as a realistic historian.

If you tackle this immense and impressive work, you will start out with the early amalgamations of peoples to become "the Poles". You will then move on to the late medieval period when the Catholic Polish state first organized and in a defining moment, merged with up-to-then pagan Lithuania to form a large joint-kingdom which later turned into an elective monarchy, one of the few in history. Kings were elected by a body known as the Sejm, with judicious helpings of bribes and blows. Far from being religiously-exclusive, they tolerated all faiths almost all the time. The enormous kingdom of Poland-Lithuania had its bright moments, its golden age (in the 16th and 17th centuries) and, due to consistently lax, loose organization (nobles with too much power and paying too little tax), a century of nearly non-stop warfare, and constant internal squabbling, disappeared from the map in the 18th century, gobbled up by more tightly organized, more totalitarian Russia, Austria, and Prussia. Davies takes you through immense amounts of data concerning religion, the urban scene---especially in Danzig---the grain trade, law and justice, the nobility, the peasants, the Jews, the practice of diplomacy, and the straight out history of the many foreign-born kings that ruled the unfortunate country before its erasure for 120 years. If Poles were brave and talented, their disorganization and relative freedom proved fatal in the face of aggressive neighbors. The title of the book is ironic. The quality is very high. If you want to know about Polish history in detail, this is your book.

Not Too Much New Material

First off, I'm a big fan of the Weakerthans. I have all their CDs and when I was searching for the new John K. Samson CD and came across this, I was excited and purchased it immediately. I figured it would be interesting to see what Samson wrote that didn't make it as a song. That said, I felt sort of cheated. The book is set up by album, almost like a chapter. First you get all the lyrics to Fallow (minus one song, for some reason) and then you get TWO poems. The following is the same of just about all the chapters, and Provincial isn't even followed by poems. So you're looking at about 8 poems total. If you're a Weakerthans fan and have all the CDs and their liner notes, you're looking at $10 or more for 8 poems. On the other hand, if you don't have the CDs or the liner notes, perhaps I would recommend it. I love the way the Weakerthans write their lyrics in paragraph form and occasionally throw in a good quotation. However, if you're buying this book strictly for the poems like I was, you'll probably end up pretty disappointed.

Solid Poetry. Book has some issues.

First off, JKS is one of my favorite poets/musicians. I will buy anything he makes. He's a genius, but this book, I don't know. I feel it could be better. It needs more content. The only poems that are included are from his albums. There isn't anything really original.

The other problem is that the formatting is strange. The first few poems follow how the poems read poetically, but the later poems are simply the lyrics of his songs in paragraph form.

The poetry is solid. The book has some issues.

Using generic examples not tied to a particular brand, coverage includes CNC set-up, operation, tooling, program structure, and machining processes. This textbook was developed to introduce the student to the basics of CNC technology, and to prepare him or her for future CNC machining and programming courses that may follow. Included is related tooling data, machining data, shop mathematics, and CNC machine and control information. Computer Numerical Control clearly distinguishes between CNC machining centers and CNC lathes and will prepare students exceptionally well for CNC machining in each respective area.

First and foremost, this textbook is intended for students with diverse backgrounds. This includes students just out of high school, or students who may have had some training in industry or in the military. These students may just be beginning alternative or second careers. Other students may already be regular employees or trainees in industry. They may need to learn CNC machining in order to improve their skills as a programmer-operator. They all need a timely but meaningful introduction to CNC. Although there is no prerequisite to this book, it is always helpful to have some minimal exposure to CNC machine tools in the workplace.

This book was written because existing books either assume that the reader has extensive knowledge of CNC or are too specialized for a complete understanding of CNC technology. Other books tend to use examples that put too much emphasis on a specific machine, or may concentrate on one part of CNC, such as machine control or programming. These books may be too theoretical or verbose, may include material that is not work oriented, or may not fully provide students a hands-on experience with the knowledge and skills they need to get started on the job.

The pedagogical approach in this book is to stress hands-on application over theoretical material. It applies a step-by-step method that is straightforward, usable, and easy to understand. Because numerous machine tool brands exist, it presents generic examples and illustrations of their common characteristics, including CNC setup, operation, tooling, program structure, and machining. After introducing each of these areas, the book shows how they are intertwined in typical CNC machining centers and CNC lathes. These generic examples give students to-the-point coverage of what they need to know (without material that is just nice to know) to get up and running on the job—efficiently, productively, and safely.

Several chapters include CNC program samples that the student will learn to read block by block. The program examples progress in a spiral fashion. This gives students a good understanding of the unit just completed, making the next unit easier to undertake. Some students may have had courses in mathematics (including trigonometry), blueprint reading, and metrology, as well as other machining-related courses, while others may need a review of these materials. Therefore, these topics coupled with data from the appendixes will be brought into the coverage as needed.

This textbook, then, provides a learning tool that can be used in both educational and in-plant training environments. In education, it will certainly help students develop a better understanding of all the components that make up CNC machining technology. Whenever possible, it is recommended that a CNC laboratory component be included with this course. This will give the student a greater understanding of the material covered in the textbook.

This text material and the methodology have been class tested at Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC) in the CNC machine-related programs. Feedback was obtained from students, teachers, and employers who subsequently employ these students. After reading this book students, regardless of their background and institutional affiliation, will have a fundamental understanding of CNC technology, CNC terminology, and CNC machine and control operations, and will be able to decipher CNC programs.
