In this lively history of thinking about what lies behind thinking, Oxford-trained cognitive scientist Claxton (Hare Brain, Tortoise Mind) ranges across societies from ancient Egypt to 20th-century Vienna and individual thinkers from Aristotle to Eugene Gendliln to trace the long development of three broad narratives that have been used to explain the mind: the supernatural, the psychological and the biological. The author's purpose in this erudite intellectual history is not to settle the question of what lies behind our conscious selves, but to explore the richness of the untidy notions of the unconscious we have inherited. His summaries of the ideas of poets, priests, philosophers and psychiatrists are colorful and brisk but fair, and his criticisms, notably of Descartes as hyper-rational and Freud as unoriginal, are balanced by assessments of their contributions. As Claxton's survey approaches the late 20th century, he begins to speak for himself, painting an extended and especially vivid portrait of a human brain that might be capable of generating poetry and madness without angels or the id. He concludes that no single account can fulfill the complex social purpose of the stories we tell ourselves about the underlying quirkiness of our minds, but he argues persuasively that we can live fuller, happier lives by embracing that waywardness. 24 b&w illustrations.

The unconscious has had a long and chequered history. For at least the last 4,000 years, societies have concocted comforting fables in the face of the recurrent puzzles of human existence—death, dreaming, madness, possession, inspiration—that invariably rely on some notion of the unconscious. Supernatural "fairy stories" need some internal proxy or contact point through which the influence of demons and spirits can flow. And without such gods and forces, some psychological machinery is needed to take over their work. But what is the unconscious? Is it "God's viceroy," the soul? Is it the locked ward of Freudian desire? Is the subliminal mind the source of the sublime emotions of the Romantics? Is it the mental microchip of cognitive science? Or is it simply the brain?

As she drags herself down the road, away from the prison walls, she is rescued by Julien, himself a small-time criminal, who keeps her hidden. They fall in love. Fear of capture, memories of her prison cell, claustrophobia in her hideaways: every detail is fiercely felt.

Astragal burst onto the French literary scene in 1965; its fiery and vivacious style was entirely new, and Sarrazin became a celebrity overnight. But as fate would have it, Sarrazin herself kept running into trouble with the law, even as she became a star. 

She died from a botched surgery at the height of her fame. Sarrazin’s life and work (her novels are semi-autobiographical) have been the subject of intense fascination in France; a new adaptation of Astragal is currently being filmed. Patti Smith, who brought Astragal to the attention of New Directions, contributes an enthusiastic introduction to one of her favorite writers.

Eventually, her ankle having partially healed, Anne begins working as a prostitute and living on her own in a series of hotels. But her life still consists of waiting (for her boyfriend, for customers) and hiding (from the cops). Her agency, cramped by life both in and out of prison, is forced to reside in her impetuousness, her salutary arrogance, and, most significantly, in the way she frames her own experience—that is, in the prose we're reading, which is hard-boiled, funny, sometimes gross, oscillating between indolence and intensity, riddled with ellipses and exclamation points. About the Author
Albertine Sarrazin (1937–1967) was a French-Algerian writer. At an early age she abandoned her studies and turned to a life of crime and prostitution. She wrote her first two novels in prison and died at twenty-nine.

Patsy Southgate (1928–1998) was an integral figure of both the 1950s Parisian literary scene and the New York School.

Patti Smith is a poet, performer, visual artist, and author of the National Book Award-winning memoir Just Kids. She has twelve albums, has had numerous gallery shows, and continues to give concerts of her music and poetry. Her books include Early Work, The Coral Sea, Witt, Babel, Auguries of Innocence, Woolgathering, Land 250, Trois, and many others. She lives in New York.

We first meet Anne sprawled at the foot of a prison wall. Trying to escape, she jumped from a thirty-foot height, breaking her ankle bone, or astragal, from which this novel takes its name. Unable to walk, Anne crawls on her knees and elbows, yard by yard, toward the nearby highway to Paris. Picked up by a passing motorist, Julien, she immediately recognizes, by subtle signs, that he too is a habitual criminal. ("There are stigmata inperceptible to those who have not been in prison; a way of speaking without moving the lips... the cigarette in the hollow of the palm, the choice of the night to act...")

From this fortuitous encounter, we follow Anne from hide-out to hide-out, live with her through months of physical pain tempered by her growing love for the strong yet tender man whom chance had cast her way - Julien, who by his strength, and even his mere presence, strips all soridness from her life and, at long last, gives it a meaning. For Astagal is, more than an accurate portrayal of the lower depths, a love story: tender, poignant, and simple.

That Albertine Sarrazin herself spent nine years in prison; that, like her heroine, she escaped one night, broke her ankle in the fall, and spent several months clinging precariously to her freedom with the help of a man named Julien, is immaterial. What does matter are the dirt-stained, blue-lined notebook pages which survived the vicissitudes of so many cells and which, smuggled out of prison to a French publisher, turned a nineteen-year-old prisoner into the writer you are about to discover.

Very French

Quite a story, much of which concerns an ankle. It reminded me in many respects of existentialist writers like Sartre; it is very present-oriented, not like a chronicle of things past; things HAPPEN. Since I do not read French, this may began artifact of translation, but in any event, it makes for a compelling read.

Somewhat useful, but a bit out of date.

This book seems quite dated for its copyright date of 1990; it is somewhat inconsistent with the currently favored fresh-is-best and low fat cuisine. The use of canned soups in the recipes is surprising in light of the fact that they are on the `foods to avoid' list on page 28. Since the assumption is that greater quantities of tyramine cause headache, it would have been useful to have tables of the estimated tyramine content of each food. Then, one could better gauge how much can be tolerated without repercussion. Recent material available over the internet identifies more foods with high tyramine content, including onions, canned tuna, all nuts, and hot yeast breads. An updated version of this book would be most welcome.

A great guide

I think there is a newer version, as my "page 28" is part of the table of contents. I bought mine from the Diamond Heache Clinic in July 2004.

No where in the recipe section is there an ingredient that contains tyramine or msg.

I highly value this book. The recipes are easy and tasty, and the scientific and medical sections are a wonderful supplemental resource to the disease of migraine.

They have a lot of good recipes to choose from. However a new book costs $20.00 at the Diamond Headache Clinic. I would not pay $100 or more for a used one. That is just crazy!

Sexy

This is a quick read to hold us over while waiting for the next full installment.
The writing was great. This is the most sexual of all the books so far, basically the story is the hero/heroine remembering what it was like to have sex with each other, wanting to have sex and fighting it, and then giving in to that desire.
For me, the ending was a little unsettled. I prefer my stories to be more wrapped up. I felt like something was going to be discovered and then was left hanging, to not worry about the future right now.
Can't wait for the next in the series!

I had to give this five stars because I love this series. Talk about hot, this starts with a slow simmer and goes to boiling very fast. The only thing I would change is to enlarge on the ending. I want to know what happens to them. I know what I want to happen and where my own mind went, yet I want in the ending.

Second chance at Love!!!

This the 4.5 book in the Black Mesa Wolves Series. I liked this book. I liked the story line and the characters. I enjoyed the chemistry between Mason and Ana. I enjoyed how Ana kept trying to be a good wolf and trying to keep Mason alive by staying away from him. I liked how Mason wouldn’t take no for an answer about getting back together with Ana. I loved how Mason kept getting more and more growly and exhibiting Alpha tendencies as the story moves along. I was not expecting the ending and I really liked it. I received this free story in exchange for an honest review. Here is a synopsis about the book. This is an EXPANDED version of the original SHORT STORY set in the Black Mesa Wolves world. For the most enjoyment, consider reading it after Wild Wolf #4, although that is not strictly necessary in order to enjoy this holiday tale! She knows her place, and she's content in it--until she met Mason Pearce and he opened her heart.
