SOME years ago, I “wrote a piece” about the Phonograph, for the North American Review. Nine years ago, that was further back than most men like to remember, and a long time in the history of an invention. Since then many things have happened, in science, in experiment, and in every phase of human activity. In looking over that article, I do not see that there is a great deal to change in it, even at this distance of time. Much that was then anticipated has come true, and much more than was then expected has happened. But the eye of prophecy always sees dimly. Merely to have foreseen a result or a general effect is enough, and it would have been the part of wisdom then, as it is now, to leave the details of fulfillment to the judgment of those taught by later experience, and the trend of the years.

Having arrived at an age when he believed men were little likely to change their minds on any important subject, Mr. Ruskin, reviewing an earlier work, said he would omit some parts but not attempt to mend. So in writing this Introduction for friend Tewksbury’s book, I will refer only to those parts of the former article which seem to me of permanent interest.

I remember distinctly that I enumerated the reproduction of music for popular enjoyment, as among the important uses that the Phonograph would serve, and so widen the gentle influence of melody and add to the general sum of pleasure. This it has certainly done, and is doing. In addition, by bringing within the reach of everyone accurate reproductions of the best music, it exerts, almost unconsciously, an elevating moral influence. Dictation without the aid of a stenographer, has been successfully achieved, while a use that did not then occur to anyone, namely, rapid transcription, has grown out of this feature of the machine. The teaching of elocution and the study of languages were mentioned, and in both of these fields I see increasing uses and larger opportunities. I know of no other such aid to education. The method and application are obvious. Music-boxes and toys were mentioned; but with the advance made in the art of record-making, the Phonograph is now so much better than any music-box, so much more varied, truer to life and nature, and more human, that it has left behind the older and more mechanical device.

In anticipating that the Phonograph would be a means of private entertainment, it did not occur to me that public entertainments would become a special feature of its use, and the instrument was designed with no such end in mind. Yet I find that a large number of persons, not possessing an instrument themselves, receive satisfaction and pleasure from its exhibition by others.

I am still attracted towards the Phonograph for the same reasons that influenced me at the beginning. In the material business world it is a time-saving device of unlimited service, and in the sphere of music it more nearly satisfies the natural desire for song and melody than any other mechanical agent.

When my first “piece” was written the Phonograph was in its childhood. It seems now to have arrived at a vigorous maturity. In one sense it knows more than we know ourselves, for it retains the memory of many things which we forget, even though we have said them. It teaches us to be careful what we say, and I am sure makes men more brief, more business-like, and more straightforward. Sometimes I think it cultivates improved manners, and I feel sure that any means tending to perpetuate the charm of music must be a help and a solace to all.

For the future it has great possibilities, and the improvements that will continue to be made from time to time will in the end bring it to a perfection that will make the Phonograph an important feature of every household.

Mostly for those with an interest in Edison Class M and Spring Motor phonographs.

The main thing to know about this little book is that it is a reproduction of a book dating from 1897. Curiously neither the seller’s ad nor the book itself includes the copyright date. I had to find it elsewhere.

The book of course speaks from the time that it was written, and that means that it focuses in detail on the two main Edison phonographs extant at that time, the Class M battery operated phonograph and the “Spring Motor” phonograph, both using the same or similar upper woks. The “Spring Motor” would go on to be renamed the Edison Triumph phonograph around 1901. If you have an interest in either of these two early machines, you will find the book useful. There are details on how they are constructed, their operation, and their maintenance. If your focus is on later machines, this is probably not the book for you.

There is also a short, but interesting introduction by Edison himself reflecting on how far the phonograph had then come.

Essential book for owners of or those interested in vintage Edison Cylinder record players (and recorders)

Quaint, dated language, short, with a limited number of drawings - this is still one of the essential books for the vintage Edison cylinder record player. I get a kick out of the early-1900's phrasing and explanations - yet they are crystal-clear, as are the drawings. An absolute "must-have" if you are an Edison cylinder machine owner or think you might want to get one in the future. Absolutely fascinating machines developed by a true genius.

An Insult to Scenic Painting

This book contains no scenic painting. Every image is made in Photoshop, and not well. A scene painting book should contain real examples of painted work. The educational value of this book is nil. If you want a real text, use the Crabtree book or Lynn Pektal's book. I was excited when this first came out only to be rudely surprised that the author seemed to subtract from the body of knowledge about painting, rather than add. The book is pretty and well produced, but you can't judge a book by it's shiny cover and spiral binding.

I ordered this book for my Drama: Stagecraft high school course and it has proven to be a winner. The instructions are clear and the illustrations step-by-step make a huge difference to first time scenery painters. We have used at least four difference painting techniques on a Victorian set for "Angel Street." Thanks for such a practical book!

Really disappointing

I couldn't agree more with the previous reviewer - there is not one single example of actual scene painting in this book - it's all Photoshop!!

The idea of the book is good, the subject of the projects is appropriate for a beginning scenic artist or scenic-art class, the instructions are pretty easy to follow, so why, oh why, didn't the author actually PAINT and photograph the examples rather than Photoshoping them?

About the Author
Dick DeVenzio gave his life to sports and to the pursuit of excellence. The son of a successful basketball coach, Dick grew up wanting to be a basketball star. He was named best high-school point guard in America by Parade magazine and went on to earn Academic All-American and Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) all-star honors at Duke. Considered by many to be a basketball genius, Dick’s writings have inspired countless coaches and athletes. He died in 2001 at age 52.

More twists and turns in this exciting and erotic series. Piper is dwelling on the past and uses her erotic fetish for release from what the past has left her. Could not put book down until I was at the end, left me hanging excited to see what the next installment has in store for Piper.

Torn Part 2...The sexy suspenseful story has just begun!!

Torn 2 starts right in where we left off on Torn 1 and Piper and Sir Jeremy are at Club Fet, in a private room lay out their scene and Piper is getting exactly what she wants, craves and desires from Sir Jeremy. We see these two are getting along wonderfully and Jeremy (the Dom) can take care of his sub, Piper. She does put Sir through his paces, not letting him fully dominate Piper to start with and there are definitely sparks. By the end of their scene, they both seem to be happy and sated. Afterwards, Piper is guiding out of the room and sits with Jeremy and his friends to calm down and Jeremy gets possessive of Piper and won't let her roam away.

While Piper is sitting with Jeremy and his friends she spots a man watching and staring at her, she dubs him "Sir Suit". She gets up to move away from Jeremy and engage Sir Suit in conversation and perhaps to a scene with him (yes, she just did a scene and yes, she is tired but..) but Jeremy (seeing what is about to happen) grabs her and brings her back to him and then escorts her from the club and back to her car and sends her home before she can talk to Sir Suit.

Sir Suit (who is a investor in the club) is intrigued by Piper and moves about the club to get closer and watch her and maybe get a chance to talk to her but he is blocked by Jeremy (whom he knows by reputation as a beginner Dom but a good one). He sees that Piper is making a move to come to him but then is pulled away and sent home and so he gives up on Piper and does a scene with someone else but Piper is on his mind as he is on Piper's mind.

The next day Piper meets with her new employer, Ann Longworth, for lunch and they start to build a relationship. Piper shares with Ann her family story and we learn more about Piper and the tragedy that made her come back home. Ann offers Piper some advice to help her in her relationship with her step-brothers and they have a nice conversation. After lunch and Piper goes to the store and buys a lock for her bedroom door so that she can have some privacy. She gets home and starts to put the lock on and has problems and because of the frustration of that and everything else going on in her life, she breaks down (sobbing) in the hallway, hearing this her step-brother (Earl) steps up and helps her and this seems to help them in their relationship.

Next day, Piper starts her new job and Ann is nervous when Piper gets there. Ann tells Piper that Ann told her son that she had hired someone (Piper) to work inside the house and provide some companionship and her son isn't happy and is determined to fire Piper before he even meets her. He is coming over for breakfast to meet and fire Piper.

Well, I won't spoil it for you but it is a shocker!!

By the way, I received this book in exchange for an open and honest review. This series is just getting started and I have a feeling that it is going to have a lot of twists and turns. I am a big fan of Ms Corgan's work and I have yet to read one of her books that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed. And this one looks like I won't be disappointed in either.

SHE HAD HER FIRST SESSION WITH MR BLUE EYES

We're meeting Piper where we left her with Mr Blue Eyes or Sir Jeremy who gives her what she NEEDS the torture and pain even though we don't know why she NEEDS the pain to ease her, which is all good but it's not until she sitting out at the bar where he sends suffocating where he just wants tí hold her and she needs her space, which he didn't seem to like. As he was making her a drink without asking what, she realising more so that he seems controlling outside the sex room, which she finds more annoying, but takes a drink as she's not quite ready tí go home. Then she claps eye in Mr Suit who she starts heading off to and where I'll give him now Mr controlling grabs her and walks her outside, so she presumes she WON'T Be getting to know Mr Suit tonight. Whilst Mr Suit see's Her and would love to have her until he see's the way Sir Jeremy is and leaves her be even though he owns CLUB FET.
The Sunday BEFORE Piper is to start work with Ann they meet up and whilst talking to her she makes her look at Earl and Joe as they're different children than they were and they had lost their father and her mum who helped raise them and that she couldn't blame them with the way they act if their father was as bad as he was. When she gets back Joe tells her not to much though at least spoke about what they did and what the had for lunch & Whilst she was putting her lock on her door Earl comes and helps her and she see's this as a promising start, between the 3 of them
She just dreams of Mr Suit as she didn't go out for to the club as she felt it'd be good for her to stay in even if it was in her room
When she goes into work the next day Ann seems off handed shall we say, though she tells her, her son found out sooner than she liked that she's hired Piper without him being there and he was coming to see for himself IF Piper was SUITABLE so when she goes to get the door and sees who's standing there NO OTHER THAN MR. SUIT......
