About the Author
Asoke K. Talukder has been with the IT industry for about 25 years. He has held senior positions in different technology companies in India and abroad. In his last industry association, he was the founder-CTO of Cellnext, the pioneering wireless technology company in India offering technology and solutions in the domain of GSM, GPRS, SMS, MMS, Intelligent Networks, CDMA, and 3G. Since January 2003, he has been with the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Bangalore and is currently the DaimlerChrysler Chair and Associate Professor at IIITB. Asoke has worked in the USA, UK, Singapore, and India for companies like Microsoft, Oracle, Informix, Sequoia, NEC, Fujitsu-ICIM, Digital, iGate, Blue Star Infotech, ICL to name a few. A postgraduate in Physics from the University of Calcutta (1976), he set up the first X.25 network in India for the Department of Telecommunications way back in 1986. Later, he set up the first Java Centre in India in 1998. He was a key engineer for Oracle Parallel Server for Hewlett-Packard HP-FX fault tolerant computers as well as for the 64 bit Informix for DEC Alpha.

He is a recipient of many international awards for innovations and professional excellence including the ICIM Professional Excellence Award, ICL Services Trophy, ICL Chief Executive Excellence award, Atlas Club Excellence Award, etc. One of his ubiquitous middleware products was awarded the IBM Solutions Excellence Award in 2001; one other product on Java Card security was recipient of an award at the GSM World Congress in 2003.

Roopa R. Yavagal completed her B.E. Computer Science from Basaveshwar Engineering College, Bagalkot, Karnataka in 1998. After her graduation, she joined the technical team at Cellnext and developed applications for cellular companies in India in the technology domain of GSM, GPRS, and CDMA. She did her M Tech from the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITB) in 2001. Her areas of interest include wireless application and service creation in wireless domain. She is currently working with Symphony Services, Bangalore.

PHILIP K. DICK (1928–1982) wrote 121 short stories and 45 novels and is considered one of the most visionary authors of the twentieth century. His work is included in the Library of America and has been translated into more than twenty-five languages. Eleven works have been adapted to film, including Blade Runner (based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?), Total Recall, Minority Report, and A Scanner Darkly.

About the Author

Over a writing career that spanned three decades, PHILIP K. DICK(1928–1982) published 36 science fiction novels and 121 short stories in which he explored the essence of what makes man human and the dangers of centralized power. Toward the end of his life, his work turned toward deeply personal, metaphysical questions concerning the nature of God. Eleven novels and short stories have been adapted to film, notably Blade Runner (based on Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?), Total Recall,Minority Report, and A Scanner Darkly. The recipient of critical acclaim and numerous awards throughout his career, Dick was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2005, and in 2007 the Library of America published a selection of his novels in three volumes. His work has been translated into more than twenty-five languages.

UBIK -- SAFE WHEN USED AS DIRECTED -- PLEASE SEE BELOW.

Caution: Ubik may cause cranial implosion in those unfamiliar with the work of Philip K. Dick.

If you are new to the work of PKD I would strongly suggest that you buy the original novel version of this work rather than this screenplay. This is an interesting work for a self-confessed Dickophile such as myself but it's debatable whether it would be of much interest to the casual reader.

Phil has written an interesting but quite unusable script. He undoubtedly understood the differences between novel and script writing, and this piece shows this awareness initially, but Phil soon forgets that he's writing for the screen. As the piece moves on he appears to be using it as a vehicle to revisit the ideas in the original book. Many scenes are way too long and there is far too much expositional dialogue. Had this been taken up by a studio it would've spent an eternity in "development hell". In fact I think this would be more successful as a radio play.

I unreservedly recommend PKD's work, but stick to the novels and short stories. It's in these formats that he excels. This still warrants 4 out of 5, however, because I found it fascinating.

A good read, if not a great adaptation

I was fortunate enough to get a copy of this in the 1980s, when it was available only in a rare limited edition. It's great to see it back in print and widely available.

This screenplay was commissioned by a French film maker and is written by PKD; to my knowledge this is the only screenplay Philip K. Dick ever wrote. As such it's probably not filmable, particularly for today's limited-attention audience, but it's as readable as any of Dick's prose, and a creditable effort for someone with no background in screenwriting.

In addition to following his novel closely, Dick takes the opportunity to add some new twists to his original story, making it somewhat less ambiguous and more linear.

UBIK is still my favorite PKD novel, and I enjoyed this different version of Dick's vision. If there is a movie in the works, it won't look anything like this. A shame; while this might not be viable for a film, it would certainly be a good place to start.

Whem do we get to see the movie?

This screenplay, which the author based on his own novel, focuses more on action than the novel did. It does, however, remain faithful to the novel. The long speeches by the main character, Joe Chip, would be better given to a voice-over narrator. Overall, it's fun to read and would make a good movie. Unfortunately, Halcyon is not using this screenplay.

A good place to start

I purchased this book when I started working as a pediatric pharmacist. The book provides a good overview of everything from changes in metabolic pathways with aging to the pros and cons of various seizure medications. With that said, it is very much an introductory piece. For a fuller picture, one still has to search available literature and work with actual patients.

As a side note, there's a plethora of grammatical errors within the textbook. At least the information that lies therein is sound.

Era of bad feelings and good results.

in 1789 the U.S. was anarchic and in financial difficulty. How the new constitution would work and if it would survive were far from certain. M. ably tells the story of how the country was formed. Fortunately, the Federalists pushed for a strong central government. Hamilton was, of course, the leading proponent of ideas. As an organizer and plotter he was extremely inept. The book allows the author the leisure to describe those early developments in detail.
among the details is the unfettered vitriol of the press. there were two fox news channels, one for each of the emerging parties. neither valued truth or even its most distant relatives.
the growth of parties was a major factor in improving voter turnout, which was low.
The Federalists turned the paper constitution into a manageable system--and then expired from their own elitism. We can, however, be glad that they had their day. Amateur historians who wish to understand U.S. history will benefit from this book.

He traces the roots of sex-negativity in the Greco-Roman culture and how it it was adopted by the early church fathers, then perpetuated over the centuries in both the Catholic and Protestant churches. He also traces the sex positivity of the Jewish culture and how it has been drowned out by the powers that have been, and why. Sexual Liberation is a well-written, well-researched, well-documented re-working of Lawrence's earlier book, The Poisoning of Eros. His new book is loaded with insightful stories that make for thought-provoking and enjoyable reading. I couldn't put it down. The dust-jacket illustration deserves mention as it not only undergirds the central message of the book, but it is also a delightful expression of the beauty of sex. Sexual Liberation offers much-needed balance against the sexual addiction bandwagon that Christendom is currently riding. Every clergyman, indeed, every thinking believer, should read this book and then "declare the year of the Lord's favor" regarding sex.

A Contribution to a Needed Conversation

A determined critic will find adequate opportunity to challenge certain of the author's conclusions, but this work offers a perspective and historical context for a thoughtful dialogue on the views of Human Sexuality in Western Society in general, and Christianity in particular. As a lay student of church history, I have long thought that the influence of St. Jerome and St. Augustine on church doctrine with regard to original sin and human sexuality was particularly destructive. Early church practices (pre-4th century) as evidenced in writings from the period exhibited a much more supportive and integrating attitude toward women in the church, which changed drastically with Jerome's extremely negative view of women, and Augustines pessimistic view of man.

This work goes back to the historical context of emerging Christianity, to attempt to re-discover the truth about what these two "Saints" corrupted. Additionally, Lawrence brings us insights by others that were attempts to restore a degree of rationality to an essentially irrational attitude concerning sexuality by Christianity. It is a valuable contribution to a thoughtful conversation about human sexuality in our Western Civilization.

I want all the churches to answer this book but I know they can't!

Raymond J. Lawrence, Jr. had the guts to tell the true story of Christianity. It is a very strong book full of not so many nice things but enlightening. I take my hat off and congratulate this gentleman. He simply had the guts to set the record straight. When someone has the stature and valor to state things such as, The central conclusion of this book is that Christianity made a catastrophic turn early in its development, a turn largely fixed in the fourth century C.E. and cemented in the eleventh, and adopted a sex-phobic Platonist posture toward sexual pleasure. In the process it jettisoned its Judeo-biblical origins. Christianity has been profoundly damaged by this radical reversal, a reversal from which the West has never recovered. Consequently, we Westerners are now part of a Christianity that is the most sex-negative of all the major world religions. You know that you are for a tough ride.

This book is not for the faint hearted person. This is a revolutionary and a liberating book with the mission of setting the record straight!
