The Life and Death of Paul McCartney 1942 - 1966: A very English Mystery, by Nicholas Kollerstrom

An underground culture has arisen around the Beatles since rumors began to surface that Paul had died–apparently in an automobile accident–and had been replaced. The date, ironically, was 9/11 of 1966. But was it true? In this brilliant book, the leading expert on the London 7/7 subway bombing–who exposed it as a hoax–takes us on an exploration of one of the strangest events in the history of rock and roll. He explains what appears to have happened, how and why.

Must Read
By Miss Rose
A well researched book on the death of Paul McCartney. If you are unsure if the rumor could be true, then this book will help you see it is possible. If you are a Beatles fan and have an interest in the rumor, this book is a must read. Outstanding.

When that which is impossible has been eliminated...

I have read about 7 books on the subject in the last year and have gone to many websites owing originally to an article in Wired in 2009 by the Italian forensic group that did the photo comparisons (who expected to, in a-few-hours-and-done, debunk the rumor but couldn't: check out http://digilander.libero.it/jamespaul/ortho_comparison.html, for very interesting photo forensic comparisons of the original Paul and "Faul"). I personally find the evidence for Paul being replaced, 99% conclusive, but the reader can decide for him or her self. I have played and sang the Beatles for over 30 years and can play 100 or more songs off the top of my head. Paul McCartney has always been my favorite pop/rock songwriter, so discovering this wasn't easy for me, but I'm a truth seeker, however naive. Although I'm sad Paul is dead (or incognito), I am relieved to know the truth.

This is the best book I've read so far on the subject, apart from "The Memories of Billy Shears" by the pen name Thomas E Harriet (cited often in tis book) which is an autobiography from Sir Paul's perspective that can't be ignored. It was the last book I bought on the topic but I hesitated because of its steep $39.95 price, but it is a very convincing ostensibly fictional personal account of Paul describing how he replaced the original. At 666 pages (note that) and with so much seeming insider detail that is plausible, it is worth it.

Between both books, one can find probably 30 or more pieces of evidence any one of which would lead anyone with an open mind to believe that the rumor was in fact true. (In any case, it's up to you to believe anything; I've long ago given up trying to argue this type of stuff; you either are curious about it or you aren't). If you are a Beatles fan in your heart, both of these books will not disappoint. Finally, merely from after having studied so many photos of the two Pauls, it is really clear to me, simply from looking at any photo of a "Paul", which is which. Remember that after Paul was replaced, the image most of us have been fed since 1966 is of "Faul", so of course that's Paul, right?

Wonderfully Written Death Mystery with a Lighthearted Touch: Read this Book for fun & to challenge your critical thinking skills
By Dr. Sterling Harwood
This is a rare theory of Paul dying in 1966, since the author claims it was well-motivated: the show must go on. Others claim that everyone from The Kray Twins to Brian Epstein murdered Paul to silence Paul on JFK or, in Epstein's case, to substitute himself for Paul through faking Epstein's death and undergoing major plastic surgery to resemble Paul. Of course, many of these theories are very hard to believe. Kollerstrom does well to focus on the scientific and forensic evidence. Unfortunately, scientists and forensic experts have not often taken this topic seriously, so the discrepancies in fingerprints, voiceprints, eye color, height, and facial features are uncontradicted but also uncorroborated. A guilty pleasure I had was reading about Yoko, who didn't make the index. So I was surprised to read so much I hadn't heard before about her, from her film Satan's Bed to some levels of trashing her work that I hadn't seen before. Yoko met Paul first, looking for John, according to Paul. Be careful to double-check lyrics, since the author admits he was not the greatest fan of the Beatles during Beatlemania at least and he seems to get a few words wrong here or there, nothing too serious. The style of writing is clear and humorous, but the author does seriously argue that Paul died in a car accident on Sept. 11, 1966. The trouble is that there are photos evidently of Paul with Ringo, Tom Jones & Dusty Springfield as late as Sept. 13, 1966. The great mysteries of why so many in and around the Beatles died, why the Beatles stopped touring, and why only George Harrison produced an autobiography and so many others such as Jane Asher didn't, are the driving forces behind the rumors of Paul's death. The more than 100 death clues found in the songs and artwork of The Beatles also keep the issue burning regarding conspiracy and cover-up of Paul's death. If you like murder mysteries, you'll love this one, though the author opts for accidental death. Sinister forces such as Aleister Crowley are considered. Was Paul Crowley's son? The biggest puzzler for me was how Paul could go from having dark brown eyes in 1966 to having light green eyes in a closeup in the 1967 Magical Mystery Tour film, specifically the video accompanying the song "The Fool on the Hill." Read this book for fun and to challenge your critical thinking about what is possible.
