Taoist Shaman: Practices from the Wheel of Life, by Mantak Chia, Kris Deva North

The shamanic roots of Taoist practice

• Explains the principles of the Taoist Medicine Wheel, including the Five Elements, the animals of the Chinese zodiac, and the trigrams of the I Ching

• Includes exercises from the “Wheel of Love” to access the Tao of Ecstasy

• Contains illustrated teaching stories about the Eight Immortals

Thousands of years ago the immortals known as the Shining Ones shipwrecked on the Chinese coast. Passing their shamanic practices--such as ecstatic flight and how to find power animals and spirit guides--on to the indigenous people, they also taught them the wisdom of the Medicine Wheel. From the Taoist Medicine Wheel came the principles of Yin and Yang, the Five Elements, the Eight Forces, the Chinese zodiac, and the I Ching. The Taoist Medicine Wheel can also be found at the foundation of traditional Chinese medicine and the esoteric sexual practices of Taoist Alchemy.

In the Taoist Shaman, Master Mantak Chia and Kris Deva North explain the shamanic principles of the Taoist Medicine Wheel, how it is oriented on the Five Elements rather than the Four Directions, how it relates to the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac and the trigrams of the I Ching, and how it aligns with the Eight Forces of the Pakua. Through illustrated teaching stories, the authors show how the energetic principles of each of the Eight Forces are reflected in the Eight Immortals. Revealing the wheel’s application to sacred sexuality, they offer exercises from the “Wheel of Love” to strengthen and deepen relationships as well as providing a means to access the Tao of Ecstasy.

“...the book shows Mantak Chia, and his co-author, Kris Deva North, further extending one of the most promising aspects of the contemporary world...the growing popularity and influence of authors like these, who seek to outline a common way forward that draws on the wisdom of diverse experiences, is an area of promise and hope.” (Reg Little, New Dawn Magazine, January 2012)

“Intense, concise, and informative. . . .” (Irene Watson, Reader Views, March 2011)

TAOISM / EASTERN PHILOSOPHY

Thousands of years ago the immortals known as the Shining Ones shipwrecked on the Chinese coast. Passing their shamanic practices--such as ecstatic flight and how to find power animals and spirit guides--on to the indigenous people, they also taught them the wisdom of the Medicine Wheel. From the Taoist Medicine Wheel came the principles of yin and yang, the five elements, the eight forces, the Chinese zodiac, and the I Ching. The Taoist Medicine Wheel can also be found at the foundation of traditional Chinese medicine and the esoteric sexual practices of Taoist Inner Alchemy.

In Taoist Shaman, Master Mantak Chia and Kris Deva North explain the shamanic principles of the Taoist Medicine Wheel, how it is oriented on the five elements rather than the four directions, how it relates to the twelve animals of the Chinese zodiac and the trigrams of the I Ching, and how it aligns with the eight forces of the pakua. Through illustrated teaching stories, the authors show how the energetic principles of each of the eight forces are reflected in the eight immortals. Guided shamanic meditations based on the Medicine Wheel teach readers how to journey to Heaven’s Garden to meet new spirit guides, create personal power fields for protection and healing, clear karmic influences, and explore scared sexuality with the “Wheel of Love.”

Alright, but should have been written without Kris
By Isantis
I have studied mantak chias work not throughoutly, but extensively enough to know what parts of the book are his words and what parts are Kris's. Kris seems to be just antoher white "shaman" who gets high on expensive and excessive retreats, which are new age in nature, and not an actual authentic cultral form of shamanism as known by actual anthropologists, scholars, and shamen. The book is a must have for the taoist scholar, or shaman. I am a taoist shaman and I do like this book a lot and am glad to have it and as a taoist shaman I knwo that taoism is an archetypal philosophy that is interchangable with many others, because of its universality. However there are parts of the book that are absolutely not taoist, which are obviously writen by kris because mantak chia is certainly a taoist in the most absolute sense. Kris even seems to be using the words shaman in the same superfluous new age sense that so many other new age writers in the field do. He even goes as far at one point to call a tantric sadhu a "tantric ascetic shaman". I laughed out loud when he said this. He is so m uch less than scholarly though that it is not funny. He could have easily told the reader what a sadhu was, and how it is in fact a type of shaman, though it does not use the term shaman (because the term shaman is an academic term, not a cultural one), and how hinduism and tantra are related to taoism and asian shamanism. However he doesnt. He minces words. A scholar would never do this. And mantak chia doesnt, even when authoring a book that is as short and concise as this one. So while it is not necessarily a "bad" book, I recommend you read this with extreme mindfulness. And stick to mantak chias other works in your study of taoism, and not Kris's.

Excellent for beginners in Taoism and Chinese Medicine
By Jose Joacir dos santos
he author brings this book a very easy language to understand. Some concepts of the Five Elements, for example, are defined and explained better than in many other books on acupuncture. It is an excellent book for those who have little knowledge of Taoism. It is rich in graphics and that should have read long ago.

For the Taoist Lover?
By Frank Beckendorf
This title explains the principles of Taoist medicine: it's origination, how it relates to the Chinese Zodiac, the I Ching, and the possibility of alignment with the pakua. For those who are unfamiliar with one or more of these terms, this is the title to pick up. Chia and North and Universal Healing tackle the topic and/or topics thoroughly and understandingly. Thus, this title is one for the eastern philosophy enthusiast. Whether you want to be, or already are, pick up this tile and learn...
