The Book of Fate, by Parinoush Saniee

A bestselling novel in Iran, despite being banned twice by the government, The Book of Fate follows a teenage girl in pre-revolutionary Iran through five turbulent decades, from before the 1979 revolution, through the Islamic Republic, and up to the present in this powerful story of friendship, passion, and hope.

A teenager in pre-revolutionary Tehran, Massoumeh is an average girl, passionate about learning. On her way to school she meets a local man and falls in love, but when her family discover his letters they accuse her of bringing them dishonour. She is badly beaten by her brother, and her parents hastily arrange for her to marry to a man she’s never met. Facing a life without love, and the prospect of no education, Massoumeh is distraught, but a female neighbour urges her to comply: “We each have a destiny, and you can’t fight yours.”

The years that follow Massoumeh’s wedding prove transformative for Iran. Hamid, Massoumeh’s husband, is a political dissident and a threat to the Shah’s oppressive regime. When the secret service arrive to arrest him, it is the start of a terrifying period for Massoumeh. Her fate, so long dictated by family loyalty and tradition, is now tied to the changing fortunes of her country.

Spanning five turbulent decades of Iranian history, from before the 1979 revolution, through the Islamic Republic, and up to the present, The Book of Fate is a truly remarkable story — and a rare insider’s view of Iranian society.

Great insight to Iran
By Laleh
I am an Iranian woman living in Canada! My manager at work, gave me this book to read. She had read the book and had found it fascinating and wanted to know if the story is realistic. I was sort of skeptical at the beginning having read quite a few books from Iranian authors trying to provide insights to Iranian society that were quite unrealistic. I have to say I was pleased with this book. Not only this is a captivating story but also quite realistic. The political and social pictures the author presents in this book are very similar to what I remember. Her account of the revolution and what happened afterwards resonated with me and made me look back and reflect on those years where I was a teenager and very much influenced by all the political chaos!! In terms of the family dynamics described in this book, especially the relationship between Masoumeh and her brothers, I can't deny that they do exist but probably not in that extend Thank God!! Family love and bonds are quite strong in Iran. Brothers are often quite protective of their sisters and mothers. The cruelty and oppression does exist but in times of need, they often take responsibility to come to rescue. Fortunately, I personally was born, raised, and married to loving and open minded families and I never felt oppression. But I know that many girls even in today's Iran are not that fortunate! Anyways, this book is altogether a great story and provides good insight into Iran's society. Be prepared it is heartbreaking and sometimes makes you wonder why Masoumeh is giving up so much. Please remember she is not weak and not giving up, she is only doing the best she can under the circumstances. I admire her!!

A Fascinating Read
By Painter Pat
I couldn't wait to get back every time I had to put it down. This Iranian author has her own unique style of writing that makes every day life in Iran exciting and interesting - even though much of it is fraught with angst and hopelessness and repression. She is especially clever with the way she stayed under the radar about politics and religion (and I can understand why because in the back of the book it says that she has several other books waiting to be approved by the 'Censorship' Board.) But it's not hard to read between the lines. I'll be looking forward to her next book.

Decent effort, but not an earth-shattering result
By Seismic Guy
I thought this book got off to a powerful start, but it really started to drag about mid-way through. It felt like it was easily 1/3 longer than it needed to be. It didn't seem like the author was able to get outside of 'her own head' and try to see the world (and her life) through the lenses of those around her. It's an adequate attempt, but I think could have been so much more.
