Kuruvilla offers thoroughly Biblical commentary with one-of-a-kind focus on preaching

If you preach or teach, it is hard to imagine a more useful commentary than this one by Abraham Kuruvilla. Dr. Abe K. (both a distinguished medical doctor and doctor of theology with honors) has a unique take on preaching...namely, we need to preach the thrust (specific theological focus in the text) which is a focus that really, really helps to pinpoint the main message of any given pericope (section of text which is a unit). See, if we can determine the authorial thrust of any section of Scripture, then it is much easier to preach or teach that section with a degree of authority and passion.
His first chapter will delineate Kuruvilla's method, but if you really want to understand the import of what he is doing for Homeletics, see his new book, "A Vision for Preaching" or check out his for part Giffith Thomas lectures at DTS in 2015 via their website or youtube.
I imagine the next thing you might like to know is how does Kuruvilla do with this method? Very well indeed. I do think that "thrust" is something that can change based on the proposed theology of the text being study (so, yes, you might not agree with each theological thrust that someone else suggests), but it will get you on the right track to "seeing this" and proposing your own that more accurately represents your ideas (should you differ). Still, it is very well done.
I found that (compared to bigger, more well known commentaries) Kuruvilla does an excellent job of exposing just enough greek (transliterated) and functional structure of the text to please. In Ephesians, he interacts with all the major views, so he footnotes ideas from Best (ICC), Obrien, Harold Hoehner, Lincoln, Snodgrass, Barth, and Theilman. And Kuruvilla is very focused on the text... don't expect long diatribes on this or that theological issue...instead, expect to get insights about what the author is doing with the text.. and why... what impact does that make. Wonderful.
Very helpful and very well informed. Granted there are more detailed commentaries on Ephesians (see some of the above), but this one strikes a near perfect balance. And you will always be in the text... learning from Paul's words to the Ephesians.
Multiple preaching outlines is a nice plus. Dr. Abe gives us two Preaching Outlines for each section or pericope. How cool is that? Again, you can easily construct your own preaching outline based on what details he has given us already... but he offers 2 possible preaching outlines just to reinforce the preaching focus. I just tweaked one of the two outlines for Eph 2:1-10. And while I have my own ideas about specific thrust by Paul, the details in this commentary help me to expose that thrust even more effectively. 5 stars.
PS...Dr. Abe Kuruvilla is a practicing MD and a Seminary professor and a prolific author who is known for his deep academic insights as well as being an amiable friend. How does this brilliant man find the time!? :)
My only complaint... Amazon needs to offer Kindle editions of his works!

Great Resource for Pastors

Great book! Very helpful for getting to the thrust of the text. I may be slightly biased, Dr. Kuruvilla was one of my profs. I find this resource very useful. I would say this is a commentary truly for preachers. Its written from the vantage point of those who are studying a passage to preach, while maintaining an level of academics that pastors should have anyhow (deals with the language some).

I would have loved to have seen him break the pericope's down further ...

Very helpful. I agree for the most part with his breakdown in pericope's but when preaching through the book of Ephesians one usually ends up breaking it down even more for 30 minute sermons. I would have loved to have seen him break the pericope's down further but all in all this is a very helpful book. I love the suggested sermon outlines.
